The RMS Peculiar Velocity of Clusters

چکیده

We study the rms peculiar velocity of clusters as a convenient statistic to put constraints on cosmological models. This statistic is easy to compute theoretically given a model for the power spectrum; we show that with some assumptions it can be directly related to the quantity Ω 0 σ8. We develop a likelihood method for estimating the rms peculiar velocity of clusters from line-of-sight velocity measurements and their associated errors. We apply our method to two samples of cluster peculiar velocities; a new sample known as the SCI sample and a subsample of the Mark III catalog. Although these two samples initially give results which are inconsistent, we show that they can be put into good agreement by the removal, particularly from the Mark III sample, of a set of clusters with multiple mass concentrations, cluster membership ambiguities, or excessive obscuration, properties which may have introduced unaccounted for errors into measurements of their peculiar velocities. Once these clusters are removed from the samples, they both favor a relatively low value for the 1-D rms peculiar velocity of clusters σv = 265 +106 −75 km s −1 (at 90% confidence), leading to the constraint Ω 0 σ8 = 0.44 +0.19 −0.13, consistent with cluster abundance studies but inconsistent with Ω0 = 1 CDM normalized to COBE at the 99.7% confidence level.

The rms peculiar velocity of galaxy clusters for different cluster masses and radii

We investigate the rms peculiar velocity of galaxy clusters in the Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) and tau cold dark matter (τCDM) cosmological models using N-body simulations. Cluster velocities for different cluster masses and radii are examined. To identify clusters in the simulations we use two methods: the standard friends-offriends (FOF) method and the method, where the clusters are define...

Peculiar Velocities of Galaxy Clusters 32 LINEAR PREDICTIONS FOR THE PECULIAR VELOCITIES

We investigate the peculiar velocities predicted for galaxy clusters by theories in the cold dark matter family. A widely used hypothesis identiies rich clusters with high peaks of a suitably smoothed version of the linear density uctuation eld. Their peculiar velocities are then obtained by extrapolating the similarly smoothed linear peculiar velocities at the positions of these peaks. We test...

Power Spectrum of Velocity Fluctuations in the Universe

We investigate the power spectrum of velocity fluctuations in the universe starting from four different measures of velocity: the power spectrum of velocity fluctuations from peculiar velocities of galaxies; the rms peculiar velocity of galaxy clusters; the power spectrum of velocity fluctuations from the power spectrum of density fluctuations in the galaxy distribution; and the bulk velocity f...

Probing the Large-scale Velocity Field with Clusters of Galaxies

What is the role of clusters of galaxies in probing the large-scale velocity field of the universe? We investigate the distribution of peculiar velocities of clusters of galaxies in the popular low-density (Ω = 0.3) flat Cold-Dark-Matter (CDM) cosmological model, which best fits many large-scale structure observations. An Ω = 1 CDM model is also studied for comparison. We find that clusters of ...
